Where in the world should I go? – Contest Winner

I made a decision on Thursday for my trip and I’m actually writing this post in the Seattle airport while waiting on my connection to Spokane, WA. Thank you for all wonderful suggestions and comments last month. Definitely a lot of places on there I still want to visit.

Below were the three major factors in my decision from the suggests:

1) Places I have already traveled. This ruled out: Ireland, Prague, Oregon/Pacific NW, Cape Code, Venice, Hong Kong, and a few more…

2) Places Rachael wants to go. This ruled out: Italy, Spain, and Australia (First big family vacation, hopefully in a few years)

3) Places I could get to from Coeur d’ Alene, ID on American Airlines. This ruled out a ton of good spots, argh!

So Hilarye of My Fotographa in Atlanta, GA ultimately influenced my decision to go to Calgary, Alberta. Hilarye suggested Vancouver, British Columbia and my original trip got shorted from 5 days to now only 3. My idea was to fly into Vancouver and ride the train across to Calgary while takes two days alone.  So now I opted to fly straight to Calgary. My itinerary is a very packed for the 3 days. Activities include: shoot at least one sunrise and sunset in Banff National Park, photograph the local flair at Stampede, play golf and hang with my friends Tayhlor and Amiee.

So congratulations to Hilarye, I hope I get some good stuff! Thanks again for all the travel ideas, I am definitely keep the list and resources on file.

Beaver Creek, Colorado Wedding – Joann and Aaron

A few weeks ago I flew to Denver to photograph a wedding two hours east in Beaver Creek, Colorado. It’s some of the most amazing scenery! Along the drive I passed bison grazing pastures and Buffalo Bill’s grave as massive snow capped mountains tower in the distance. It was a pleasure for me to photograph Joann and Aaron’s very intimate wedding. There were only six people including me. The couple met in Dental school at the University of Louisville and have been together for nine years.

Joann grew up in Manchester and was a senior in high school when I was a freshman. She was between my sisters and I in school. It was my first time meeting Aaron and he’s a great dude despite being a Razorback. We almost have him converted to being a Wildcat fan! We were like old pals after our short two day adventure. We drank sake, shot pool, and played golf in the rain.

We were totally blessed with the weather… It had stormed and rained both days. Then just before the ceremony it cleared and ended up being a gorgeous afternoon which provided excellent light and dramatic scenery for the photographs. The ceremony was held on a small bridge over a mountain stream. No one heard the vows for the rushing water except the couple. They actually preferred it that way making them less nervous in front of the large crowd of four witnessing the act. After the photos were finished we sat down to a very nice dinner at the Osprey Lodge where everyone was staying. The chef prepared an awesome five course meal ending with his spin on Tres Leches which was to die for!

Check out some of my favorite photos, enjoy!

Wal-Mart in Crenshaw

Let me start by saying I love Wal-Mart! When growing up in the south that’s all you have, it’s a one stop shop in most small towns. There’s always a friendly greeter, $25 pops and a couple strange works… Generally speaking a use White House Custom Color as my pro lab and print needs but when in a pinch and for family stuff I use Costco pro services. Well today I was really in a last minute bind needed 10 4×6 prints on the fly yesterday! The major, 10 hour travel day coming returning from Cabo yesterday put me way behind today. I squeezed in a re-scheduled meeting this morning at the St. Regis and I need to leave for LA for more appointments and of course basketball tonight. So quick on my feet on my way out the door I have Desiree locate and upload the photos I need near by my appointment. Well she found a Wal-Mart in Crenshaw…

After my lunch I proceeded to pick up my prints with my buddy James… The Wal-Mart was actually located inside a shopping mall and was three stories with escalator and shopping cart movers, crazy but very urban. I go to the photo lab on the second floor and ask to pick up my print that I ordered online. The guy replies, “online?” Then the photo manager comes over to help and locates the my order. It rings up $2.05, awesome! I’ll be on my way, NOT!

It was marked on the envelope, please get a “photos release”… I tried to argue that I was the photographer and I was the professional and how could I have the high resolution files to prints the photos if I were not the photographer. I showed my business card and Visa Check Card. The manger comes and makes me fill out a copyright form with all my info and the photographer’s info, ME AGAIN! Two seconds later my cell rings… “Hi, I have a client of yours here that wants to print some photos from ‘so and so’s’ wedding. Is that okay?” I could see the girl on the phone 10 feet away, so as I turn away quietly answering, “yep, you bet.” I quickly put my iPhone in my pocket. The girl hangs up and comes over to ring me up and had no clue. So if your in a pinch and need some photos stick with Costco!

Maria - July 27, 2009 - 4:58 pm

Wow, that it one funny story! I could not stop laughing! Wow.
I guess it’s good that they are looking out for your best interest at heart, lol. :)

Jared - July 1, 2009 - 11:05 am

OMG…that is hilarious! Especially the phone call part.

Leah - July 1, 2009 - 7:20 am

I have had the same thing happen to me multiple times! They will never let me print my own pictures!!! That is why I stopped using their lab completely!

vcs - June 30, 2009 - 4:12 pm

True, but there is no way someone would have high resolution digital files, at least clean ones, if I didn’t give them permission…

Hillary - June 30, 2009 - 2:36 pm

I have had this same issue and I am no way no how a professional….I just shoot for my friends who need help!

I like Sam’s Club too – funny they are affiliated with Wal-Mart but they are way less annoying…

On the other hand – if someone was stealing your photos…you’d probably thank them!

Aaron Dieppa - June 30, 2009 - 1:02 pm

That’s crazy!! Sounds like you handled it well though. I had no idea Walmart was like that! Hilarious!

Cathy - June 30, 2009 - 7:59 am

Wow. That’s both funny and unfortunate. Glad you finally got the prints!

Kelly Anne - June 30, 2009 - 6:26 am

Walmart is notorious for being sticklers for photo releases – which is GREAT in some ways, but really annoying in others.

I did a rush shoot for a friend of mine and she needed prints ASAP – she took the files I gave her to Walmart for prints, and they nearly refused her service (I think she may have started to cry… not sure how she eventually got her prints).

Henceforth, I’m including a release with EVERY file I send, with explicit instructions to call me if the release is not sufficient.

Glad they finally released the photos to you.
